2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards Filmmaker Grant Nominees Announced

The filmmaker grant nominees have been named for the 2016 Film Independent Awards. The annual event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 in Santa Monica and winners will be highlighted at the Santa Monica annual event.

PIAGET PRODUCERS AWARD

The Producers Award, now in its 19th year, honors emerging producers who, despite highly limited resources demonstrate the creativity, tenacity and vision required to produce quality, independent films. The award includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant funded by Piaget.

The finalists are:

DARREN DEAN

MEL ESLYN

REBECCA GREEN AND LAURA D. SMITH

 

TRUER THAN FICTION AWARD The Truer Than Fiction Award, now in its 21th year, is presented to an emerging director of non-fiction features who has not yet received significant recognition. The award includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant.

The finalists are:

MOHAMMED ALI NAQVI AND HEMAL TRIVEDI directors of AMONG THE BELIEVERS

ELIZABETH CHAI VASARHELYI director of INCORRUPTIBLE

ELIZABETH GIAMATTI AND ALEX SICHEL directors of A WOMAN LIKE ME

 

 

KIEHL’S SOMEONE TO WATCH AWARD The Someone to Watch Award, now in its 22st year, recognizes a talented filmmaker of singular vision who has not yet received appropriate recognition.

The award includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant funded by Kiehl’s Since 1851.

The finalists are:

ROBERT MACHOIAN & RODRIGO OJEDA-BECK directors of GOD BLESS THE CHILD

FELIX THOMPSON director of KING JACK

CHLOÉ ZHAO director of SONGS MY BROTHERS TAUGHT ME

 

All the winners of the filmmaker grants will be highlighted at the Spirit Awards ceremony and announced at the Spirit Awards Filmmaker Grant & Nominee Brunch on Saturday, January 9, 2016.
