The Wallis Presents the U.S. Premiere of Debbie Allen’s Freeze Frame

Published by:

The passion and pain of Freeze Frame will burst onto the stage in a fusion of dance, music, film and theater for four performances only on February 5 – 7 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. Written, directed and choreographed by three-time Emmy Award-winner Debbie Allen, Freeze Frame takes audiences on a rollercoaster ride through some of LA’s toughest streets where gangs, poverty, violence, and drugs are an everyday reality. With original music by Stevie Wonder,

James Ingram, Ricky Minor, Arturo Sandoval and Thump, Freeze Frame is a dance-driven narrative that will reframe the conversation about violence in America.

In addition to the public performances, there will be a gala benefit performance of Freeze Frame on Thursday, Feb 4 to be followed by an onstage Architects of Change panel conversation on violence in America hosted and presented by Maria Shriver and Allen as part of Shriver’s ongoing Architects of Change: The Conversation Series, aimed at opening hearts and minds to affect positive impact in the world. All Gala proceeds to benefit the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and Arts Education for the young people of the Greater Los Angeles area and America.

“The opportunity to spur social change is at the heart of not only Freeze Frame but also my own artistic core,” said Debbie Allen. “Maria Shriver and I know that to affect real positive change in the violence and mental health problems in this country we must engage in constructive dialogue. The many voices in Freeze Frame bring to life the stories of those most affected by violence and provide a lens through which audiences can be a witness, see themselves in the picture and consider how to make change.”

“I’m thrilled to be partnering with Debbie Allen and producing the Architects of Change conversation to bring about social change through dance, theater and thought-provoking conversation,” said Maria Shriver. “It’s our hope that this conversation and production will make people stop, think, reflect, and inspire them to take part in the larger national conversation and become part of the solution.”

“It is important for us, as well as a privilege to present Freeze Frame and the Architects of Change: The Conversation Series at The Wallis, supporting both Debbie Allen, an artist and commentator on the world in which we live, and Maria Shriver, whose journalism and activism seek to inspire social change,” said Paul Crewes, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts’ new Artistic Director who takes the reins full time in April 2016. “This critical work and the issues it debates are particularly relevant at this time in America.”

Freeze Frame will have four performances: Friday & Saturday, Feb 5 & 6 at 8PM, Saturday, Feb 6 at 3PM, and Sunday, Feb 7 at 12PM. For more information, visit

The Gala Benefit Performance and panel discussion will be Thursday, Feb 4 beginning at 5:30PM.

Tyrese Suggests Chris Rock Should Not Host Oscars Due to Lack of Diversity

Tyrese Suggests Chris Rock Should Not Host Oscars Due to Lack of Diversity

Tyrese was one of the first to speak out in support of boycotting the Oscars after it was revealed that all the acting nominations went to white performers for the second year in a row. Now, he appears to be questioning whether comedian Chris Rock should be hosting the awards show.

On Monday, Martin Luther King Day, Tyrese went on a rant about those choosing not to protest the awards show. “Is Chris Rock still gonna host the Oscars after this blatant racism?? Is everyone still gonna show up?? In this town, I guess it takes homosexuals to be discriminated against in order for someone to finally step UP and wanna do something,” he declared. “You have to take your hat off to the homosexual and gay community cause right now they’re as strong as black people USE to be when it comes to their rights.”

On Wednesday, Tyrese continued his argument, writing: “If Andy Cohen of [Watch What Happens Live] was hosting the Oscars and they purposely left out all gays and or homosexuals from being nominated, HE would of stepped down already. This is a #fact.”

If Andy Cohen of #WWHL was hosting the Oscars and they purposely left out all gays and or homosexuals from being…

Posted by Tyrese Gibson on  Wednesday, January 20, 2016

In 2015, no gay men or women were nominated in the acting categories at the Oscars, but Neil Patrick Harris, a homosexual man, hosted the awards show. At this year’s Academy Awards, not one LGBT person was nominated in the four acting categories.

The 37-year-old Furious 7 actor went on to say that while he wholeheartedly supports the boycott of the Oscars, he still thinks Leonardo DiCaprio deserves to win for his role in The Revenant. “For the record… I HATE that this is all happening on the year that Leonardo DiCaprio is gonna win his first Oscar for BEST ACTOR,” Tyrese quipped. “Leo looooooveeessssss black people!!!!!! Leo in my homie!!!!!”

However, not everyone agrees with Tyrese about boycotting the Academy Awards. “I don’t know if avoiding it altogether is going to help, but I just think we have to continue to move forward,” Niecy Nash told ET at the Critics’ Choice Awards. “We have this awareness and this spotlight — we’ve got to look at other work. There’s other work out there that I think was missed. We’ve just got to do better.”

Stacey Dash Speaks Out on Oscars’ Lack of Diversity: ‘It’s Ludicrous’

Stacey Dash Speaks Out on Oscars’ Lack of Diversity: ‘It’s Ludicrous’

Stacey Dash has a lot to say about the lack of diversity among this year’s Oscar nominees.

On Wednesday, the Clueless actress and Fox News contributor expressed her outrage over the fact that, once again, only white performers made the cut while chatting with Steve Doocy on Fox & Friends.

WATCH: Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee to Skip the 2016 Oscars

“I think it’s ludicrous,” she said. “Because we have to make up our minds. Either we want segregation or integration.”

The outspoken actress, who turned 49 on Wednesday, also stated that she’s glad the issue has finally received some attention, but in order for things to change, we need to get rid of the “double standard” currently in place.

“If we don’t want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET, and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black,” she explained. “If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms. It’s a double standard.”

WATCH: Chris Rock Calls the Oscars the ‘White BET Awards’

Dash continued on, arguing that because there’s no White History Month, a Black History Month shouldn’t exist either.

“What I find astounding is that we’ve had a president who is black in office for the past eight years, who gets most of his funding from the liberal elite in Hollywood,” she added, referring to President Barack Obama. “Yet, there are not very many roles for people of color. How can that be? And why is it just now being addressed?”

A few celebrities, including Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith, are boycotting this year’s ceremony, as they are frustrated that an all-white list of nominees in the acting categories was announced for the second year in a row. Doocy brought up the fact that he understands why Smith would be angry, as her husband, Will Smith, wasn’t nominated for his role in Concussion.

WATCH: Whoopi Goldberg Slams Oscars Boycott: It Pisses Me Off!

“He did a great job in the movie, but at the same time, what does that say about how people are selected for these awards?” Doocy asked Dash.

“Right. That’s assuming they’re selected by race, which I think would be a disservice to the people who are looking at the films and making the choices,” she said. “Maybe [the Academy] need[s] to be more, you know, integrated, and there needs to be more diverse people in the process of electing.”

Doocy then explained that, although the Academy demographics are kept secret, he claims they are “predominately white males” based on investigations that have come to light.

WATCH: Stacey Dash ‘Appalled’ by Patricia Arquette’s Oscars Acceptance Speech

“I hope they’re looking for the best movies and the best actors,” Dash said in response to Doocy’s statement. “The good news is, there’s attention brought to it now. But, like I said, over the past eight years, we’ve had a president who’s black, who gets his funding mainly from Hollywood. ‘The elite liberals.’ So, it’s odd to me that this has now become such an issue.”

This, of course, isn’t the first time Dash has spoken out against issues she’s passionate about. Last February, she also made an appearance on Fox & Friends where she revealed she was “appalled” by the 2015 Academy Awards ceremony, specifically calling out Patricia Arquette for her lack of history knowledge.

Last month, Dash was suspended for two weeks by Fox News after delivering NSFW language on-air while talking about Obama’s speech on terrorism one night earlier.
