FOX’s ‘EMPIRE’ & Saks Fifth Avenue Team Up To Bring Hit Drama’s Iconic Style To Life

FOX’s record-breaking drama EMPIRE and Saks Fifth Avenue announced today an exclusive partnership to bring the highly covetable fashion inspired by the #1 broadcast entertainment series to life. EMPIRE and Saks Fifth Avenue’s multi-platform collections will be available in-store, online and on-screen and will celebrate the hit drama’s dynamic, buzzworthy fashion timed to the series’ second season premiere in September.

The partnership will feature curated collections from luxury fashion brands that represent the hit drama’s glamorous aesthetic including fine jewelry from Alexis Bittar, women’s ready-to-wear from Cushnie et Ochs, men’s and women’s footwear from Jimmy Choo and handbags and accessories from MCM.

Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde Among Lead Hosts For The 2015 Global Citizen Festival

Global Citizen has announced the lead hosts of the 2015 Global Citizen Festival, and Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde are among the A-list celebrities. Rounding our the list are Stephen Colbert, CHIME FOR CHANGE co-founder Salma Hayek Pinault, Deborra-Lee and Hugh Jackman. The festival is presented by Gucci and CHIME FOR CHANGE. The free-ticketed concert, headlined by Pearl Jam, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay, will take place on the Great Lawn of New York’s Central Park on September 26, 2015.

As the lead hosts of the Festival, Stephen Colbert, Salma Hayek Pinault, Deborra-Lee and Hugh Jackman, Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde will encourage fans and friends to get involved with the Global Citizen movement and help end extreme poverty by 2030. Each host is committed to encouraging actions on, where fans can participate in the latest Action Journey and enter the draw to win a pair of tickets to the Festival.

Since the headliner announcement of the 2015 Global Citizen Festival in early July, nearly half a million actions have been taken on behalf of the world’s poor. Today’s official host announcement coincides with the next Action Journey release, where global citizens will champion the importance of improving universal access to education, especially for girls and women. Global citizens will be asked to send a voice message to Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway, encouraging her to attend the 2015 Global Citizen Festival and make a commitment to universal education. Hugh Evans, CEO of The Global Poverty Project, will be meeting with the Prime Minister next week where he will personally deliver these messages.

MSNBC returns as a media partner of the Global Citizen Festival for the second year. Willie Geist, Janet Mock, Thomas Roberts and Alex Wagner will host the simulcast of the full concert from 4-10 p.m. ET on MSNBC and live from Central Park. The YouTube livestream will be hosted by AsapSCIENCE and Matthew Santoro on, presented by T-Mobile.Tamron Hall will host NBC’s one-hour television special of the event, produced by director and screenwriter Richard Curtis, to air onSunday, September 27. A one-hour special of the Festival will also air on BBC One in the UK on Monday, September 28 and will be distributed globally through BBC Worldwide. The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis will honor a group of prominent Sports Legends and Honorees when it hosts its 30th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. The annual event, hosted by NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti and his son Marc, and chaired by Mark Dalton, raises funds to support the ground-breaking spinal cord injury research done by researchers at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis – the world’s most comprehensive spinal cord injury research center, which is based at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. NBC News Icon Tom Brokaw will serve as Master of Ceremonies and the event will feature live performances by The Beach Boys and The Pointer Sisters.

The 2015 Great Sports Legends include Jorge Posada, Karl Malone, Ray Lewis, John Stockton, Michelle Kwan, Victor Espinoza, Jennifer Capriati and Chip Ganassi. Honorees for the evening include Gloria and Emilio Estefan who will receive The Buoniconti Fund Inspiration Award, and Humanitarian Award recipients Orianne and Phil Collins.

The celebration assembles sports legends, celebrities, philanthropic icons and corporate leaders to support the efforts of The Buoniconti Fund Board of Directors and numerous longtime benefactors.

The 2015 Great Sports Legends include:

Jorge Posada – Former catcher for 17 seasons with the New York Yankees and a five-time World Series champion.
Karl Malone – Nicknamed “The Mailman,” Malone is a NBA Hall of Famer, two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and was a power forward for 18 seasons in the NBA with the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers.
Ray Lewis – Lewis is a future Hall of Famer and is considered one of the greatest ever to play middle linebacker in the NFL. He played his entire 17-year career for the Baltimore Ravens, was Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and 2003 and two-time Super Bowl Champion.
John Stockton – Stockton is a two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, and is regarded as one of the best point guards of all time. He holds the NBA records for most career assists and steals and played his entire career as a point guard for the Utah Jazz.
Michelle Kwan – Widely considered one of the greatest figure skaters of all time, Kwan is a two-time (1998 and 2002) Olympic medalist, a five-time (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2003) World champion and a nine-time (1996, 1998–2005) U.S. champion (tied for the all-time record).
Victor Espinoza – The first jockey in history to enter the Belmont Stakes with a third opportunity to win the Triple Crown, finally winning that elusive honor this year on American Pharaoh, becoming the oldest jockey and first Hispanic jockey to win the award.
Jennifer Capriati – A former World No. 1 professional tennis player and International Tennis Hall of Fame member, Capriati won three women’s singles championships in Grand Slam tournaments and a Gold Medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Chip Ganassi – A former American racing driver, Ganassi is the owner and CEO of Chip Ganassi Racing, which operates teams on the IndyCar Series, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and Tudor United SportsCar Championship. He has been involved with the North American auto racing scene for more than 30 years and is considered one of the most successful as well as most innovative owners.

Humanitarian Award Recipients, Orianne and Phil Collins– Phil Collins is one of the most successful songwriters and performers of all time. Collins had dozens of hit albums and singles in the UK and the US between 1976 and 2010, either as a solo artist or with Genesis. He is one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary singers of the 1980s and beyond. Phil and Orianne are co-founder of the Little Dreams Foundation (LDF), an international charity which fulfills the dreams of young aspiring talents without financial means to achieve their goals. The LDF helps children thrive by supporting them with personalized training and supervision in music, arts and sports by godparent mentors, providing them with optimal opportunity for success, and potentially advance toward a professional career in the field of their true passion. The Mindy Project finds new home at Hulu

Director, Actress, and Executive Producer Mindy Kaling has found a new home for The Mindy Project.


After its departure from Fox, the Kaling comedy has found a new home at Hulu. The terms of the deal and premiere date were not immediately disclosed, but it is a go. Universal Television, the studio that makes The Mindy Project, began talks with Hulu immediately after Fox passed on a fourth season.

Hulu announced on Friday that it has ordered a fourth season of The Mindy Project that will total 26 episodes — making the comedy part of its original programming slate, and future seasons a possibility.

“I am thrilled The Mindy Project has found a new home on Hulu, where so many of our fans are already watching the show. It’s such an exciting place to be,” Kaling said in a statement.

Universal Television, the studio that makes The Mindy Project, began talks with Hulu immediately after Fox passed on a fourth season.

Mindy has been a beloved member of the Hulu family, so this deal is a natural extension of our relationship,” said Craig Erwich, senior vice-president and head of content for Hulu, in a statement. “With so many of her fans already catching up and tuning in to the series on Hulu, we know her millions of fans will be eager to find out what Mindy has in store for the next chapter.”

Universal Television’s executive vice-president Bela Bajaria said in a statement: “We are excited about our partnership with Hulu and look forward to sharing our amazing comedy with the show’s many loyal fans for seasons to come.”

The eighth annual “Black Women in Hollywood” luncheon is set to take place Feb. 19 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Essence’s Editor-In-Chief Vanessa K. De Luca and Shaun Robinson from Access Hollywood announced this year’s honorees Wednesday via an online press conference.

“Orange Is The New Black” stars Uzo Aduba, Vicky Jeudy, Danielle Brooks, Lorraine Toussaint, Samira Wiley, Adrienne C. Moore and Laverne Cox will receive the Vanguard award, and Ruth E. Carter will be honored with the Visionary Award.

Regina King will receive The Fierce & Fearless Award, while Gugu Mbatha-Raw will receive the Lincoln Breakthrough of the Year Award.

The Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon recognizes the extraordinary achievements of trailblazing women in film and television.

Past honorees include: Oprah Winfrey, Lupita Nyong’o, Ava DuVernay, Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Angela Bassett, Queen Latifah, Taraji P. Henson, Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson, Mara Brock-Akil, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Suzanne de Passe, among others.

“The past year has been a game-changer for women in Hollywood. We are creating, performing and calling the shots,” De Luca stated in a press release. “By recognizing our leading ladies both in front of and behind the camera, Essence Black Women in Hollywood illuminates the ‘power of our presence,” noted Michelle Ebanks, Essence president.

“Essence embodies the diversity of our stories, and Black Women in Hollywood allows us to honor fresh and innovative storytelling, as well as groundbreaking portrayals,” added Ebanks. “This year we are proudly honoring seven brilliant actresses from the original hit series “Orange is the New Black”; a critically-acclaimed actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw; an accomplished performer and director with a career spanning three decades Regina King; and an inspirational creative talent Ruth E. Carter.”

Essence celebrates its 45th anniversary this year and according to the release, the event will commemorate the magazine’s annual Hollywood issue (March), which will hit newsstands on Feb. 13th.

Broadcast Film Critics Association Host Celebration of Black Cinema (Red Carpet Arrivals)

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) hosted a Celebration of Black Cinema at the House of Blues last night. The evening included special performances by Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Judith Hill, from the critically-acclaimed documentary ’20 Feet From Stardom.’ Actress Bresha Webb, Dawnn Lewis and other stars were present at the House of Blues Sunset Strip on in West Hollywood.

The star-studded event celebrated this year in black cinema, and highlighted the unprecedented and historic flood of acclaimed films this year.

The even incorporated remarks given from prominent members of the black community.

BFCA member Shawn Edwards, a film critic at Fox 4 Kansas City and the founder of the website “I Love Black Movies,” conceived the original idea for the event.

This year more than 40 notable films and documentaries have opened, primarily written, directed and/or produced by black men and women, along with so many others featuring notable lead and supporting performances by black actors and actresses, the Association noted.

BFCA President Joey Berlin and KTLA’s Sam Rubin were Co-Executive Producers of the event.
