Amy Poehler’s Difficult People has been added to 2016 Paleyfest lineup. The Paley Center for Media today announced that the critically acclaimed Hulu Original comedy series will complete the PaleyFest Los Angeles 2016 lineup. Creator/Writer/Executive Producer and Star Julie Klausner, along with stars Billy Eichner, Andrea Martin, James Urbaniak, Cole Escola, and Executive Producer/Showrunner Scott King are scheduled to participate as the first Hulu Original at PaleyFest LA on Friday, March 18 at 7:30pm PT at the Dolby Theatre.

“Being included in this year’s PaleyFest LA is a huge honor. It’s terribly validating as a creator and artist to be recognized by such an esteemed institution and it’s exciting to get the opportunity to interact with Difficult People fans in the excellent company of the teams behind other great shows,” said Difficult People Creator/Writer/Executive Producer and Star Julie Klausner. “The Paley Center was one of the first entities to be hip enough, in a sea of navel-gazing film and high art snobs, to realize how groundbreaking, vital and important the medium of television has always been, and to give its creatives their due. Finally, on a personal note, my first job out of college was as a curatorial assistant in the New York office of The Paley Center for Media (then called The Museum of Television and Radio), so to be able to return to Paley as an honored creator, writer and star of an Amy Poehler-produced series is beyond any dream I would have been bold enough to have formed in my twenties. I am so thrilled.”

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the first PaleyFest Los Angeles panel featuring the cast of a Hulu series,” said Billy Eichner. “I’ve had great experiences doing Paley panels for both Billy on the Street and Parks and Recreation in the past and I’m thrilled to add Difficult People to the list!”

Debbie Allen Tackles Gun Violence in a Dramatic Way

Published by:

Freeze Frame Conversation 2

Debbie Allen is an architect of change. The living legend is using her celebrity to bring awareness to gun violence and has started a movement entitled, “Architects of Change: The Conversation Series; reframing the conversation around gun violence.”

Allen is making it her mission to bring awareness to gun violence, and she has recruited the help of some prominent people to help her make her case.

Allen’s latest production, Freeze Frame, is a theatrical journey about gun violence in America. The production opened in Los Angeles on February 4th at the Wallis Annenberg Center for The Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

Allen held a panel discussion, moderated by Maria Shriver, about gun violence immediately following the World Premiere of Freeze Frame,

During the discussion, Shriver asked Allen what sparked her interest to create [Freeze Frame] such a project, “You wrote this and made it such passion” she noted. Allen responded by saying she had experienced racial segregation, witnessed violence against others just because they were black and went on to say, that this topic is, “more relevant than ever” and that “I just imagined myself” in that position. A very moved Allen revealed, “I keep rewriting it.”

Allen concluded by saying, “The Arts helped me rise up against; The Arts helped me live.” Allen said she knew she could not become desensitized to gangs and police violence. “Each time I would hear about a child I would hear about it as if it were my own,” in reference to why this topic is “more relevant than ever” the Grey’s Anatomy Director said. The production pays homage to Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, Columbine and others. “Sandy Hook tore my heart apart – it just broke my heart,” the FAME alum said.

“I feel like a Children’s Rights Activist. I know that the Arts is the way. There is nothing like the Arts,” said Allen when asked how youth can otherwise spend their time. Shriver asked Allen what was next in terms of what everyone can do. Allen responded by saying, ” I only know what I can do. This production Freeze Frame – it made you look inside.” A very humbled Debbie Allen confessed, “I did a lot of studies to do this.”  She also touched on people being afraid to speak up, saying, “We have lost our moral spine.” She challenged the audience to be a part of the movement by standing up and saying something.” [Jada Pinkett Smith] stood up and said something – in reference to the recent Oscar controversy.

“You have to have courage [to say something]. I want to follow the political election, take this show on the road, ask people to reach out and say something, ” said Allen.

Allen was asked by Shriver [to answer] what is the one thing you want people to take away. To answer her question, Allen said, “Stop the madness. That’s the purpose of Freeze Frame. Take a good look at this picture. Where are you in this picture.” She also said she would like to bring attention to the fact that “What we do affects one another” and added if “The world would start to understand that we are one that would be my hope.”

Shriver summed up everything by saying, “It begins with us. We can all leave here feeling hopeful. Everybody has a voice – everybody can do these five things [a short list featured in program booklet] and still go about daily life.” Her last words were to Debbie Allen. The former first lady said, “Debbie, I thank you for being artsy, having passion, and commitment to make us all freeze and be a part of this process.”

Debbie Allen and Maria Shriver Host Star-Studded Freeze Frame LA to Standing Ovation

Debbie Allen and Maria Shriver presented Freeze Frame Gala Performance, “Architects of Change and The Conversation.” The world premiere set the stage and offered a platform as a call to action for everyone to get involved on the issue of gun violence. The star-studded event was held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills Thursday.

The performances were spectacular and the event was a huge success – on all levels – and premiered with a standing ovation from the audience. Allen, who is the co-owner and founder of The Debbie Allen Dance Academy [DADA] and multi-talented performer also acted in the controversial-themed production. Shriver who is a respected journalist and former First Lady of California, served as moderator for the discussion panel after the stage show.

The show which was written, directed and choreographed by Allen was a prelude to a panel discussion with a candid conversation about gun violence in America. The three-time Emmy Award-winning choreographer/director who was also honored with a standing ovation, hushed the audience with sincere gratitude. The packed audience listened intently as Allen said, “I know this is a different kind of show, but this needs to go around the world.”

Allen who showcased her acting chops in the thought-provoking play, showcased two very different characters. In her dual role, Allen played the wife of a minister – who is trying to win his son over and bring him back to the church. Allen plays the supportive mom and wife. In her other role, Allen plays a Hispanic woman who has lost both her daughter and granddaughter to gun violence. She is left with the grief of trying to raise her grandson who has gone mute after being traumatized by the ordeal, of losing his mother and sister. Allen, in her role, says that she can’t forgive [the gangbangers who took their lives] but that she prays to God every night. Allen was practically unrecognizable in the role as a Hispanic mother. Her Spanish dialect was superb. Though we are not surprised to see such talent in Debbie Allen, the characters are so raw that it gives you a feeling of inspiration as to why we love to see Allen on stage, as well as behind the camera. She is captivating, and had everyone in the audience in tune to her message. At one point, the audience was so quiet that all you could hear were sniffles. When the lights came up, there were no dry eyes in sight.

The Freeze Frame production was so moving and inspiring. The characters were all very relatable. The production consisted of young dancers, who at times stole the spotlight. They brought magic to the stage with the crafty and upbeat choreography. The way Allen brought together young and old performers was nothing short of brilliant. The production, which was also streamed live, was attended by a varied audience, and had something for everyone. Allen even managed to incorporate a basketball-themed dance skit, an ode to Norm Nixon, her husband who is a retired basketball player, perhaps. The basketball leader takes the stage and begs the question, “Am I in a gang?” This question he never really answers, but leaves it open for the audience to figure out.

The audience received a treat with beautiful individual performances by Vivian Nixon, the Broadway veteran showcased an array of traditional dances and was a stand-out on stage. Vivian is the real-life daughter of Debbie Allen, but was very believable in her role as a daughter of a drug-addict mom. She conveyed great emotions and brought the character to life. The entire cast was outstanding. There was a mixture of hip-hop, jazz, tap, ballet, and african dance. The production was a visual extravaganza.

There were many scenes that allowed you to put yourself in that moment to question what you would do if you were put in that type of situation. Tragedy does strike at the end, leaving the audience open to discussion about the what ifs, as it relates to gun violence and street gangs.  At the end of the production, the names of slain victims are displayed on the stage screen to remind everyone that victims are real people who have lost their lives to gun violence.

Allen praised several audience members. She began by thanking her husband Norm Nixon. She honored Shonda Rhimes, whom she called, “The Queen of Television,” and it was obvious the love the two have for one another with their embrace, “Love you so much Shonda,” Allen said. She went on to thank Berry Gordy saying he was the “first person who ever gave DADA a dime.” Allen recognized her sister Phylicia Rashad, and Jada Pinkett Smith, both were in attendance. Allen said of Pinkett Smith, “She’s like a daughter to me.” Allen gave deep appreciation to Wallis Anneberg, saying in front of the packed audience, “Wallis Anneberg’s heart is as big as this building; her vision is bigger than this state; great human; greatest support of the Arts and young people.”

Among the celebrities who attended were Tony Goldwyn, Mary J. Blige, Lisa Ray McCoy, Corbin Bleu, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Kenny Lattimore, Dan Bucantinsky, David Bohnett, and many others.

Freeze Frame will have performances from February 5th-7th in Los Angeles. Oh, if you decide to catch the show, be sure to take some kleenex’s.
