Stars Come Out in Full Force to Support Inaugural ABFF Awards

BET Networks and the American Black Film Festival joined forces to recognize diversity in Hollywood at a star-studded event at the Beverly Hilton Sunday.

The first ABFF Awards: A Celebration of Hollywood brought many stars out. The show was launched by the American Black Film Festival and BET – in response to the Oscars lack of diversity in this year’s nominations.

The mission of the ABFF Honors is “to celebrate Black culture by recognizing individuals, movies and television shows that have had a significant impact on American entertainment, as well as those who are proponents of championing diversity and inclusion in Hollywood.”

The event, which focuses on individuals, television programs and movies of 2015 that celebrate black culture, honored Diahann Carroll with the Hollywood Legacy Award.

The event was hosted by Mike Epps, and producer Will Packer was honored with the Distinguished ABFF Alumni Award.

Nia Long and Mike Epps to Host 24th Annual Trumpet Awards

“The Best Man” actress Nia Long and “Survivor’s Remorse” actor Mike Epps, co-stars of the upcoming ABC sitcom Uncle Buck, will host the 24th Annual Trumpet Awards to be held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, January 23, 2016.

Among the prestigious list of individual honorees at this year’s ceremony include GRAMMY® Award winning and platinum-selling artist Ne-Yo, who will be presented with “The Visionary Award;” television and film producer Will Packer, who will be honored with the “Entertainment Award;” legendary comedian and actor George Wallace will receive the “Legend Award” and Alicia Boler-Davis, EVP and COO of General Motors will be honored with the “Corporate Executive of the Year Award.”

In a very special tribute, the African American Women in the United States Congress will be presented with the distinguished “Political Leadership Award” in recognition of their unparalleled leadership and steadfast work in representing their constituents and promoting diversity.

Dr. Curtis Ivery, Chancellor of Wayne Community College will receive the “Education Award;” Alexis M. Herman, Former Secretary of Labor and Chair & CEO of New Ventures will be presented with “The Phoenix Award;” and HRH Princess Basmah Bint Saud, International Humanitarian, will be honored with the “Global Humanitarian Award.”

The Trumpet Awards was conceived, founded, and nurtured by Ms.Xernona Clayton, who has built the Awards and Awards Foundation into a renowned testimonial around the world. “We have come so far since we started this project in 1993 and I am extremely appreciative to those individuals who saw the vision and who have worked with us for over twenty years. We are most jubilant to bring this event to the world and to celebrate the achievements of those who had an impact on our community,” says Ms. Clayton.

Diahann Carroll to Receive Hollywood Legacy Award

Los Angeles, CA – Continuing its tradition of providing platforms showcasing work of people of African heritage and promoting camaraderie among multicultural artists in Hollywood, the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is proud to announce legendary singer, actress and author Diahann Carroll will be the recipient of the “2016 ABFF Honors Hollywood Legacy Award.” ABFF Honors will be held February 21, 2016, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills, CA.

Hosted by Mike Epps, the event will feature a presentation of nine awards, including Film of the Year, Television Show of the Year, Excellence in the Arts, Hot In Hollywood and the Hollywood Legacy Award. Invited guests to this private affair will include artists and other prominent members of the Hollywood community. The evening will begin at 4 p.m. with red carpet arrivals, followed by an elegant and spirited awards dinner and after-party.

The mission of the awards gala is to celebrate Black culture by honoring individuals, movies and television shows that have had a significant impact on American entertainment, as well as the people who are proponents of championing diversity and inclusion in Hollywood.

In paying tribute to Ms. Carroll, ABFF Honors looks to illuminate a distinguished career that has spanned more than sixty years. She has moved effortlessly between the worlds of film, television, music and the stage, earning her the designation Hollywood legend. She is an Oscar nominee, a Tony Award winner, a Golden Globe winner, a four-time Emmy nominee, a Grammy nominee and a best-selling author.

Diahann Carroll made her Broadway debut starring in the Harold Arlen/Truman Capote musical House of Flowers. After seeing her in that production, Richard Rodgers created his own starring vehicle for her, the Broadway musicalNo Strings, for which she won a Tony Award.

Perhaps best known for her groundbreaking lead role as a nurse and single mom in the critically acclaimed television series Julia, which debuted in 1968 and ran for three years, Diahann Carrroll earned her first Emmy nomination. Her extensive television career includes the game-changing role as “Dominique Devereaux” on the internationally popular television series Dynasty, as well as recurring roles on USA’s hit series White Collar, ABC’sGrey’s Anatomy and A Different World.

On the big screen, Ms. Carroll received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and a Golden Globe award for her starring role opposite James Earl Jones in Claudine. Other notable films include Carmen Jones, Paris Blues, Porgy and Bess, Hurry Sundown, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Eve’s Bayou.
