Oscars Make Plans to increase diversity

Published by:

The Oscars are trying to turn things around, in the wake of this year’s nominations where no actor of color was recognized in any of the four acting categories.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced Friday, it will add three seats to its 51-person board in an effort to double the number of minorities and women in the Academy by 2020, according to Variety.

It also met with African-American host Chris Rock to make sure he’s still on board. Rock, has been under pressure to drop out as host from many credible people of power in the entertainment industry as the fall-out continues.

Variety points out that, of 305 eligible films this year, only a handful were made by minority directors, and fewer were directed by women.

Beginning later in 2016, new member’s voting rights will last 10 years and be renewed only if that member has been active in film. Members will get lifetime voting rights after three 10-year-terms, or if they’ve been nominated for an Oscar, the report revealed.

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said, “The Academy is going to lead and not wait for the industry to catch up. These new measures regarding governance and voting will have an immediate impact and begin the process of significantly changing our membership composition.”

The board made the changes in an emergency meeting Thursday night, as an undeniable response to the controversy over the Oscar nominations being so white. The Academy will also launch a new campaign aimed at increasing diversity.

Power players Jada Pinkett Smith, and honorary Oscar Winner Spike Lee have posted on social media that they will not be attending this year’s ceremony.

Stacey Dash Speaks Out on Oscars’ Lack of Diversity: ‘It’s Ludicrous’

Stacey Dash Speaks Out on Oscars’ Lack of Diversity: ‘It’s Ludicrous’

Stacey Dash has a lot to say about the lack of diversity among this year’s Oscar nominees.

On Wednesday, the Clueless actress and Fox News contributor expressed her outrage over the fact that, once again, only white performers made the cut while chatting with Steve Doocy on Fox & Friends.

WATCH: Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee to Skip the 2016 Oscars

“I think it’s ludicrous,” she said. “Because we have to make up our minds. Either we want segregation or integration.”

The outspoken actress, who turned 49 on Wednesday, also stated that she’s glad the issue has finally received some attention, but in order for things to change, we need to get rid of the “double standard” currently in place.

“If we don’t want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET, and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black,” she explained. “If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms. It’s a double standard.”

Dash continued on, arguing that because there’s no White History Month, a Black History Month shouldn’t exist either.

“What I find astounding is that we’ve had a president who is black in office for the past eight years, who gets most of his funding from the liberal elite in Hollywood,” she added, referring to President Barack Obama. “Yet, there are not very many roles for people of color. How can that be? And why is it just now being addressed?”

A few celebrities, including Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith, are boycotting this year’s ceremony, as they are frustrated that an all-white list of nominees in the acting categories was announced for the second year in a row. Doocy brought up the fact that he understands why Smith would be angry, as her husband, Will Smith, wasn’t nominated for his role in Concussion.

“He did a great job in the movie, but at the same time, what does that say about how people are selected for these awards?” Doocy asked Dash.

“Right. That’s assuming they’re selected by race, which I think would be a disservice to the people who are looking at the films and making the choices,” she said. “Maybe [the Academy] need[s] to be more, you know, integrated, and there needs to be more diverse people in the process of electing.”

Doocy then explained that, although the Academy demographics are kept secret, he claims they are “predominately white males” based on investigations that have come to light.

WATCH: Stacey Dash ‘Appalled’ by Patricia Arquette’s Oscars Acceptance Speech

“I hope they’re looking for the best movies and the best actors,” Dash said in response to Doocy’s statement. “The good news is, there’s attention brought to it now. But, like I said, over the past eight years, we’ve had a president who’s black, who gets his funding mainly from Hollywood. ‘The elite liberals.’ So, it’s odd to me that this has now become such an issue.”

This, of course, isn’t the first time Dash has spoken out against issues she’s passionate about. Last February, she also made an appearance on Fox & Friends where she revealed she was “appalled” by the 2015 Academy Awards ceremony, specifically calling out Patricia Arquette for her lack of history knowledge.

Last month, Dash was suspended for two weeks by Fox News after delivering NSFW language on-air while talking about Obama’s speech on terrorism one night earlier.

Legendary Director Spike Lee will not attend the Oscars. The filmmaker is the latest in a long line of entertainment industry power houses to voice an opinion of the Academy Awards not recognizing people of color.

The outcry over African-American actors being snubbed from this year’s Oscars hopefuls has reached a breaking point, especially on social media where the hashtag, “Oscars So White” has brought more attention to the omission of black actors for the awards show.

On Monday, the director announced that he would not be attending the ceremony on Feb. 28.

Via Instagram, Lee asked how it was possible that there were no nominations for black actors for the second year running. After revealing that he nor his wife would attend the esteemed awards show, Lee added, “Dr. King said, “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but he must take it because conscience tells him it’s right.”

The Hollywood legend accepted an honorary Oscar in November for his collective body of work. He did offer these words in the post, “I would like to thank President Cheryl Boone Isaacs and the Board of Governors of The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for awarding me an Honorary Oscar this past November. I am most appreciative. However my wife, Mrs. Tonya Lewis Lee and I will not be attending the Oscar ceremony this coming February. We cannot support it and mean no disrespect to my friends, host Chris Rock and Producer Reggie Hudlin, President Isaacs and The Academy.”

Michael Jackson’s Original Album And The Documentary “Michael Jackson’s Journey From Motown To Off The Wall” Set For Release As A CD/DVD

Published by:

michael-jacksons-off-the-wall

On February 26, during Black History Month, the Estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Legacy Recordings will release exclusive CD/DVD and CD/Blu Ray editions of Michael Jackson’s revolutionary 1979 recording, Off The Wall. The package will include the original version of the album   bundled with the new documentary Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, directed by Spike Lee.  The documentary will make its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2016, and its world television premiere on SHOWTIME on Friday, February 5th at 9 P.M. ET/PT on-air, on demand and over the internet.  After its premiere on SHOWTIME, it will be broadcast in territories around the world.

THE ALBUM – The importance of Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall cannot be overstated.  Recorded when he was just 20 years old, the album heralded Michael’s stunning emancipation as a singular musical force and creative visionary.  It smashed the ceiling on record sales for black artists, ushering in an exciting  new era of R&B-to-pop crossover airplay, chart, marketing and sales  trends not seen before in modern pop music.   It’s the record that “invented modern pop as we know it,” wrote Rolling Stone.  For fellow black artists of the day, Michael served as an illuminating inspiration.

To Black America, Off The Wall transcended music and entertainment altogether. The success of the album marked a level  of  national and international achievement  that conjured  pride  in a culture that as late as the end of the 1970s was still fighting for the kind of social acceptance that Michael’s album received.   Because of Off the Wall’s indelible influence, 21st century artists as disparate as Beyonce, Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd all have a blueprint they turned to for creating their superstardom.

Written by Michael Jackson, the first single from Off The Wall, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”, was Michael’s first Grammy and first single to hit #1 in the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist.  With the singles “Rock With You”, “Off the Wall” and “She’s Out of My Life” Jackson became the first solo artist in history to have four singles from the same album peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album was an enormous commercial success; as of 2014 it is certified eight times platinum in the United States and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The Music:  “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”; “Rock With You”, “Workin’ Day and Night”; “Get on the Floor”; “Off the Wall”; “Girlfriend”; “She’s Out of My Life“;  “I Can’t Help It”; ” It’s the Falling in Love”; “Burn This Disco Out”.

THE DOCUMENTARY –   Produced by Spike Lee, John Branca and John McClain.  For Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, director Spike Lee assembles a wealth of archival footage, including material from Michael’s personal archive, interviews with contemporary talents and family members, and Michael’s own words and image to create this insightful chronicle from the star’s early rise to fame through the release of this seminal album. A look at a chapter of his career that is rarely examined, Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall allows audiences to travel with Michael as he gets his start at Motown, strikes a new path with CBS Records, and forges a relationship with legendary producer Quincy Jones. An illuminated portrait emerges of how an earnest, passionate, hard-working boy would become the “King of Pop.”

Partial list of interviews:  Lee Daniels; The Weeknd; Pharrell Williams; Misty Copeland, Kobe Bryant; Mark Ronson;  John Legend;  Questlove;  Katherine Jackson; Joe Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Jackie Jackie  L.A. Reid and more.
